    Trofim Denisovich Lysenko (1898 1976) was an agronomist. During the reign of Lenin and Stalin years in the Soviet Union, he became the chief proponent of the work of the self taught plant breeder Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin (1855 1935) and his brand of Lamarckism a pre Darwinian theory of evolution of the species proposed in the French scientist Jean Baptiste Lamarck (1744 1829). He was appointed as the president (1938 56) of the Lenin All Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the director (1940 65) of the Institute of Genetics, USSR Academy of Sciences. The leadership of the USSR believed his promises to deliver rapid increases in crop yields. Lamarck proposed that organisms can inherit traits acquired by their ancestors. The first giraffes stretched their necks to eat leaves on tall trees. Their offspring acquired this elongated neck and the desire to further stretch it. A species with long necks was born. The Soviet leadership sought an indigenous theory to counter the "capitalistic" works of Mendel and Charles Darwin and to separate evolution from genetics. Following a speech he gave at a conference in 1948 denouncing Mendelian genetics as "reactionary and decadent", Lysenko rose to prominence. Geneticists who opposed Lysenkoism were dispatched to the gulag as "enemies of the Soviet people". Most confessed to their "errors" in propounding Mendel's and Darwin's teachings and, consequently, kept their jobs. No one dared challenge Lysenko until 1964 9 years after Stalin died even when he claimed, between 1948 and 1953, that wheat plants can produce seeds of rye. But, as the Encyclopedia Britannica observes, "he and his followers, however, long retained their degrees, their titles, and their academic positions and remained free to support their aberrant trend in biology."

    Genetics (and, by extension, genetic manipulation) is a field of science that has the potential to stir more controversy and protest than any medical issue that came before it. This is because understanding the principles and controlling the variables of genetics opens up the possibility of humanity taking the reins of its own evolution from nature. The ability to alter genetics and “design” future generations, however, can pose consequences that may be unknown to current scientific thought such as the fictional “genetic saturation” seen in the anime series “Gundam SEED.” In the series, genetically upgraded humans, while possessing mental and physical abilities surpassing their genetically “pure” counterparts suffered problems related to their sexual health. A few episodes of the series noted that genetic superiority came at a cost that none of them had anticipated: sterility. Their physical capability to engage in sexual intercourse was not compromised, but their sexual health suffered in the sense that those who didn't have genetically “pure” parents could not sire offspring. The problem, according to dialogs on the show itself and background information released by the creators of the series, was that the upgraded genes had “saturated” the gene pool, to the point that combining one's upgraded DNA with others who had genetic upgrades effectively “shut down” the ability to procreate naturally. The only solution found within the series that did not involve sacrificing genetic superiority was to add further alterations to the human genome. This was stated to be little more than a stop gap measure, a short term fix for a dangerous sexual health problem. According to the follow up series, “Gundam SEED Destiny,” further changes to human DNA would only compound the problem within “two or three generations.” Of course, sexual health is rarely considered to be an aspect of human existence that would be compromised by artificial genetic upgrades. In most science fiction shows that exhibit it, writers seem to be more concerned with the moral and cultural implications of being “genetically superior.” One such example can be found in Gene Roddenberry's “Andromeda,” where a human sub race known as Nietzscheans had drastically opposite values from normal humans. The Nietzscheans, as a race, take pride in their genetic superiority and will go to great lengths to both ensure that they pass on their genes and prove that they have superior genetics. This extends not only to unaltered humans, but also to their fellow Nietzscheans. This takes the form not only of physical conflict, but also in political, social, and physical backstabbing, betrayal, manipulation, and competition. To the typical Nieztschean mentality, passing on superior genes is the best way to ensure that the entire race is made stronger with each successive generation, ensuring their continued survival and superiority over the much more numerous ordinary humans. The pursuit of genetic superiority, however, has fueled a phenomenon in science fiction that has a frighteningly realistic parallel. Even with just the prospect of manipulating genetics looming somewhere on the horizon, there are already groups opposing studies going into that area. There are clear benefits aside from genetic superiority, such as the possibility of ridding humanity of diseases with genetic links. However, there are several groups that are throwing religious and theoretical arguments against genetic manipulation. Science fiction has echoed this sentiment in several stories, with most sci fi worlds that have genetically superior humans being opposed by armed, militant groups of the “genetically pure.”

    Dear Mr. Katz: I recently purchased your book, "Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer!" and have tried very hard to curb my dog Honey's aggressions, which I have now recognized as both fear and food aggression... after reading your book. But instead of better, I fear it is getting worse. We adopted her from the age of 2 3 months, and she was fine in the beginning. Very loving and extremely hyperactive. The hyperactivity continues, and she still jumps up at anyone coming near the house. She seems to fear tall men, especially if they have anything in their hands, like a garden rake or spade, and she backs away from strangers, even small children. She is afraid. She gets aggressive with anyone she senses is afraid of dogs, and she has gone for them, making it worse for them, of course! She becomes aggressive with anyone who passes her by when any food is around, and she will growl and snarl at them, telling them in effect that the food is hers, so hands off! To crown it all off, she snarled and growled at me today when I went up to stroke her, which she has not done before. I have always tried to correct her, either by the leash, or we have a muzzle which we correct her with, and failing that, I will put her in her crate as a punishment. I am not a novice with a dog. Before Honey, we had the most wonderful shepherd/husky dog, who was similarly abandoned, and I never had one problem with him he was wonderful. I have taken honey to obedience classes She does sit and stay, also goes down when she is instructed to. I feel that I have done everything possible to alleviate her aggression, but it doesn't seem to work. I have two daughters who both pour love on her too, and quite frankly, I am afraid one day that she will become vicious Can you please give me some advice, because I do not want to have to have her put down. I have tried everything you recommend in your book, including spitting in her food, and making her wait to eat last. But I must be doing something wrong! His name is Forbes and he is one of the most compatible dogs I've ever had the pleasure of sharing my life with. To be honest, I have a feeling that your dog's issues are very much a result of poor genetics and weak nerves. But before jumping to any conclusions, you must first recognize that all of the information you've droned on about provides me with NONE of the information I need in order to help you. So... what do I need? I need to know what happens when you correct the dog? Does she continue to act aggressive? Does she stop immediately? Does she try to bite you? Does she go submissive? And once you get her to pay attention to you, what's happened once you've started to create new/positive associations with the stimulus, as described in the book? These are all of the questions you need to be asking yourself. As well as: Is my timing on the money? Is the dog associating my corrections with the behavior (the aggression). Am I being consistent? (Be honest... if the dog isn't getting a firm correction EVERY TIME she exhibits the behavior, then it's no wonder that you're not getting the results you seek.) Are my corrections motivational? If the distraction/stimulus is more motivational than your correction, then you'll never get any results. You'll know that your correction is motivational when the dog stops looking at the stimulus and starts looking at you. Please let me know. However, judging on what you've described I would not be surprised if this is mostly the results of poor genetics and weak nerves. And in which case, you will never be able to overcome the dog's genetics, so the dog should either be put to sleep or confined to such a lifestyle that she only comes in contact with you and people that she does not show the aggression towards. But before you make any snap decisions I would recommend consulting with a professional who can evaluate the dog for you. It's impossible to give an accurate assessment without seeing the mutt.     What Causes Macular Degeneration

    Macular Degeneration is an eye disease that affects the macula, located towards the back of the eye, along the retina. The macula is the part of the eye that is responsible for processing light in order to generate sharp, detailed and clear images that are then sent to the brain. Macular Degeneration typically does not appear until age 40, and Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMG) typically develops in people aged 55 and older. Hereditary and Age Appear to be Main Causes Because of its prevalence among family members, it is believed that genetics play a major role in the development of Macular Degeneration. Genetics also plays a role in AMG; however with AMG the simple aging process seems to be the bigger contributing factor. To date, scientists have identified the gene they believe plays a significant role in the development of Macular Degeneration. This gene is called complement factor H (CFH). In addition to this gene, a gene on chromosome 10 called PLEKAH1 is also suspect. Much more study is required to fully understand the roles these two suspect genes play in this eye disease that today strikes 10 million people aged 40 and over. In the rare cases in which Macular Degeneration strikes younger individuals, it is believed that something other than genetics or age leads to a build up of abnormal blood vessels behind the retina. Myopia and infection are being studied as the causes in these cases. Other Causes Being Investigated Several risk factors have also been associated with the onset of Macular Degeneration. Smoking is believed to have a significant impact on its development. If you smoke you can add reducing the risk of developing Macular Degeneration to the list of reasons why you should quit – now! Age is a factor in Macular Degeneration, too. Rarely is this disease diagnosed in persons under the age of 40. The older a person gets, the greater the chances become that he or she will begin to develop symptoms of this eye disease. Gender is thought to be a factor as well, with females being at greater risk than men. Race plays a role too, with Caucasians being affected much more than African Americans. More studies are being conducted to determine whether a person’s diet can increase the risks. Early results seem to be suggesting a connection to the onset of Macular Degeneration and an increased intake of saturated fats/high cholesterol levels. A decrease in antioxidant levels is cause for concern too. Antioxidants, found in fruits and vegetables, help prevent cells from oxidizing, a process that leads to their ultimate destruction. Studies are also being conducted to see whether exercise can reduce the risks of developing Macular Degeneration. There is belief that keeping blood pressure within “normal” ranges will reduce the risks associated with AMG. Exercise combined with diet is a great way to regulate blood pressure.     Scientists from the University of Bonn recently discovered a gene that is responsible for a hereditary form of hair loss known as Hypotrichosis simplex. The research is the first ever to identify a specific receptor that is essential for hair growth. The researchers said that their findings will lead to new breakthroughs that could resolve the problem of hair loss. "Although Hypotrichosis simplex is very uncommon, it may prove critical in understanding the mechanisms of hair growth," says project leader Dr. Regina Betz from Bonn's Institute of Human Genetics. Individuals affected by this condition usually go bald during childhood. Alopecia or the process of hair loss especially around the scalp progresses as an individual gets older. As examined in the project, the researchers found out that the cause of Hypotrichosis simplex is genetic abnormality that restricts certain receptor structures on the surface of hair follicle cells from forming properly. These receptors play an essential role in hair growth that was previously unknown to scientists. Dr. Markus N? then, chairman of Genetic Medicine at Bonn University's Life & Brain Centre said that the defective receptor structure falls into the category of what are known as G protein coupled receptors. This is good news, because, they are particularly well suited as points of impact for drug treatments, he said. The researchers were also able to pinpoint an endogenous messenger that attaches in the hair follicle to the receptor. Researchers believe that the study opens up opportunities for future studies about hair loss. "We can now search selectively for related substances that may be used in therapies for hair loss," say Dr. Ivar von Kьgelgen of Bonn’s Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology.
