    Surface Friction

Surface Welding Surface welding is a very common process that involves bringing two objects together permanently. This is very often done with pipes that need to be fitted together. With a good welder doing the work you may not be able to see what has taken place unless you look very closely. Surface welding involves heating up but of the openings and then letting them cool back together as one. As the hot metal cools off it will become secure together. You do have to make sure the weld is done correctly though so that there wont’ be any leaks. A heated torch is used in surface welding and you need to make sure you use the right safety equipment. This includes very long gloves to protect your hands and arms from the flames. You also need goggles that are tinted so your eyes don’t get hurt from the bright light at the end of the torch. The process of surface welding can often be done in just a matter of a couple of minutes in many cases. This is also a very common type of welding that takes place in construction. There are bends and elbows where the joints need to be securely together. Welding them is a very strong bonding process and it doesn’t require bolts or other materials to hold it in place. This makes surface welding a very fast and affordable option for construction work. When you have to get a job done right and on schedule you will look for such methods to ensure it can happen. One of the main components working in your favor during surface welding is friction. As the two separate objects that are to be welded move against each other there is a great deal of friction being generated. The energy involved in this will be transferred into heat which is also a big part of the welding process. You may find that learning how to surface weld is a very good skill to have. You can often learn it in a shop class or by enrolling in a technical course. Make sure the person teaching you how to surface weld is qualified though so you don’t get injured. You also need to be confident in your abilities before you begin doing it unsupervised. You don’t want to compromise the reliability of a surface weld by not having completed the process accurately.

When Your Car S Parts Are Hard To Find

One of the major problems that classic car owners have is that they have a hard time locating the right kind of auto parts or replacement parts for their vehicle. This is mainly because most auto parts stores at present offer only auto parts for the most popular vehicle makes and models as well as the auto parts for the newest cars in the market. They do not take into consideration that there are still old cars still alive and working that also need some auto parts replacements. So how do you find that elusive auto part for your car? Join Auto Clubs You can try joining auto clubs and ask around with other members who own the same vehicle as you. That way, you can ask them where they get their replacement parts. You can search for such auto clubs using car magazines or you can search through the Internet for them. Be An Online Hunter Take full advantage of what the Internet has to offer. You can exhaust all search engines for auction sites or online bulletin boards. Many stores or sources of auto parts replacements for classic or old cars advertise their products online. Put these sites in your archives so you can visit them regularly and check for updates. Or, you can also contact these sources yourself and ask them if they can get the auto part that you want for you. Be A Scarp Yard Scavenger On one of your spare and free days, you can take a dive to a local scrap yard. Many owners of classic cars share that they are able to look for good replacement parts for their classic vehicles from scrap yards. They do maintain though that you should be patient enough to go through the stack of cars at these scrap yards.

How To Make Losing Weight A Little Easier

Starting a weight loss diet is one of the easiest things a person can do. Staying with it, well, that’s another thing entirely. There are so many reasons that people just can’t seem to stay with their weight loss attempts. If you are like most people, you probably have a pretty full schedule nearly every day with what seems like more things to do than hours in the day to get them done. Between work, school and things at home that need to be done, it’s no wonder that it can be so hard to find time to lose weight. Most of the time you are probably eating haphazardly, eating whatever is fast, convenient and can be eaten on the go. Your average day never seems to give you the time to exercise. Well, if you are serious about losing that extra weight there are a few things you can do that will help make your quest a little easier. It will still take some effort on your part, but you can do it. To start with, you need to have a plan. Weight loss is a long term goal, and while long term goals may be important, they often do not have a sense of urgency. It is too easy for less important things, but things that have to get done right now, to take over and put your long term goal on the back burner. The way to remedy this is to break your long term goal down into a series of short term ones, then break these short term ones into things that find their way onto your daily “to do” list. Make a list of what you want to accomplish with your weight loss plan and be specific. Rather than saying “I would like to lose this extra weight”, say “I want to lose 20 pounds in the next six months”. Now that you have a long term goal for yourself, you need a plan of action to make it a reality. This is where you now say “to do this, I want to lose 3 4 pounds each month”. Now that you’ve set yourself up with a series of short term goals, you need to say to yourself “I will lose one pound every week until I have lost 3 4 pounds this month”. Now keep in mind that it is not enough to simply have the goal. You need to remind yourself of it everyday, all day. Put your goal of losing one pound each week on your refrigerator door, on your computer screen, your calendar or your day planner, and even on the dashboard of your car. This way your plan is always there with you everyday, all day to keep you reminded of just how important it is, where ever you go. You probably won’t be able to make all of the changes you want to all at once. To be realistic about it, select one or two things like snacking or fast food to eliminate, and focus on those things. Write down what you want to do different, and make it part of your ‘things to do today” list. Each day as you do these things, mark it off as done for that day. By doing this, you can see that you really are achieving your goals and you will feel so good about yourself each day for making yourself stay committed to it. If one day here and there you didn’t accomplish your daily goal, do not feel defeated and do not get down about it. What you need to do here is sit down and assess the situation to figure out why it didn’t happen that day. Perhaps you just need to plan your day a little better. If you had planned to bring a low fat, healthy lunch with you but got rushed and did not have the time to make it, start making it the night before and keep it in the fridge, then all you have to do is grab it and go. Remember, you are only human and you will make mistakes, but the important thing is that you learn from your mistakes and move ahead rather than letting them defeat you. Take a few minutes at the end of each day to reflect on everything that you did that day, and to plan out your next day. The little bit of time you take each day to plan will make a major difference in your weight loss success.

    Bedside Table 24

bedside table I didn’t give it much thought for the longest time, but you do have to think about your choice when you buy a bedside table. These, at least in my home, are a great place for an alarm clock, and they also hold the little things you need each day but don’t really have a place for. That might be extra change, earrings, or your watch. I cleaned homes for a living a long time ago while going through college, and to see a home without these tables was a rare sight indeed. Most people like to have them. Those with large beds often don’t have to think about anything by style when they buy a bedside table, but those with small and shorter beds have to think about a few things. I once had a glass bedside table, and I almost cut my head open on it one night. I am not sound sleeper, and I roll around a lot. I woke up after banging my head on it, and realized had I moved just an inch lower, the corner could have cut my head. I got rid of it that day and went shopping for a new set for my home. If you have a bed that is not far from the floor, you have to get a bedside table that is completely level with the side of your bed, or one that is significantly taller so that you don’t cut your head like I almost did. You should also look for something that has rounded corners in the event that you do bump your head or even your arm or leg on the bedside table. That would be a nasty shock in the middle of the night for sure. For the most part, you can find a wide variety if bedside tables anywhere you can buy furniture. If you are buying a bedroom suite, but you aren’t sure about the tables that come with it, ask for a substitution. Most places will do this for you if something that matches can be found. You can also look online to find styles of bedside table that you may not find near your home. These are probably ones you have to put together, but that is a small price to pay for getting the right kind so you can sleep peacefully at night. It’s certainly not something that most think about until there is a problem. However, prevention is always a great idea.

    Building A Computer Picking Components

Picking the parts for your computer is one of the most important things in building a computer, because you cant assemble a computer without the parts! Picking parts for computers has become much easier than before, because things have been standardized, however, you need to make sure everything will fit. The first thing to think about when choosing the components for your computer is what you are going to be using it for. If you are creating a computer for just checking your eMail and using word, you are going to need much diffrent parts than a computer that you are going to be using for gaming. CPU The first thing you should pick out about your computer is what CPU you are going to use, because it determines what motherboard you are going to get, which determines what other components you get. There are two main CPU manufactruers, Intel and AMD. Both have their Pros and Cons, but they are pretty similar. I would suggest using AMD, because they give you a little more bang for the buck. Here is a brief overview of the diffrent Intel and AMD CPUs: Budget: AMD: Sempron Intel: Celeron D Midrange: AMD: Athlon 64 Intel: Pentium 4 High End: AMD: Athlon64 X2 Intel: Pentium D If you are spending below $500, I would suggest a budget proccesor, Between $500 and $1000, midrange and $1000 and above I would suggest a high end proccessor. Motherboard Choosing the right motherboard is vital to building your computer. First, make sure you find a motherboard that has the right socket type for your CPU. Then, check the diffrent features of the motherboards you are looking at. If you arent going to buy a video or sound card, make sure your motherboard has onboard video and/or sound. Other things to check for on your motherboard are the hard drive interface, graphics card interface, expansion slots, the memory size and speed. Also, check for the chipset. There are too many to talk about, but generally Intel and nVidia chipsets are better than the other ones. Now that you picked out your motherboard, you know what to look for in your other components. RAM Getting the right speed and amount of RAM is vital to the speed and stability of your system. If you are running XP, you will probably need at least 256 or 512Mb of RAM. If you are going to be doing anything memory intensive, gaming, rendering or just want a faster computer, you should get 1Gb. Make sure your motherboard has enough DIMMs and the right type of DIMMs for your RAM. Also, be sure to check the speed and CAS Latency. Hard Drive Now its time to pick your hard drive. There are few variables in picking a hard drive. The first, and most important is size, 120Gb is usually enough for most people unless, you are going to be storing alot of pictures and video. Also, make sure you get an HD with the right interace that fits your motherboard. Almost all motherboards have IDE, but some have SATA (Serial ATA) Which is a much faster hard drive interface and uses a thinner cable which helps with airflow in your case. There is even SATAII now, which is twice as fast. Also look at speed, almost all desktop HDs are 7200RPM and Cache, most are 8Mb, dont buy a HD below those standards. If you want to spend some money, you can get 2 HDs and run them in RAID which increases performance. Video Cards If you are going to be doing any gaming, be sure to buy a video card, if youre not, onboard video is fine. The first thing to check for is the interface, most are AGP or PCI E. I personally like nVidia cards better. If you are going to be doing graphic intensive games, I would suggest at least a 6600. If you have alot to spend, go with a 7800. Optical/Floppy drives Another thing you are going to is a CD drive, most are IDE. Get a DVD Burner if you are going to use it. Also, you should get a floppy drive, they are only $10ish and you might need it to install drivers when building your computer. Case and Power Supply Make sure you have a sufficient power supply!! If you have a high end computer, you should get a 450W PSU. Otherwise, 350W should be fine for most people. Most cases are ATX, but make sure it is the same type as your motherboard (ATX, MicroATX, BTX, etc...). Be sure to make sure all your components are compatible!

    Avoiding Bad Credit And Repair

Staying in contact with your payments each month can help you avoid bad credit. If you research the marketplace before coming to a purchasing decision, you are well on your way to avoiding bad credit and repair credit hassles. You want to consider all applications, including credit cards, student loans, mortgages, and car loans carefully to avoid being overcharged. Making the wise decision ahead of the game is the ultimate solution to maintaining good credit. Most people when taking out a home mortgage loan are not aware of the options available to them. Many will walk in the bank door, fill out the application, and accept the terms & conditions when offered to them. If you ever heard the many reports that swept the pages of newspapers, television and other advertising sources…families and individuals are filing bankruptcy because they cannot afford their homes anymore. This is because these people did not take the time to check the marketplace first and searching the options available to them. As you can see, the millions reported are in debt and searching for a way to repair their credit. The solution then to avoiding bad credit and repair is to research, invest wisely, make good decisions, and budget. Being informed and educated is two of the best tools offered to us. There are mortgage loans that offer overpayments and underpayments and these loans include vacation packages and lump sum payments to the borrowers. There are also other loans available that offer low mortgage monthly installments and low interest rates with insurance policies attached that will pay your mortgage if you are sick, unemployed, in an accident and so on. On the other hand, there are mortgage loans that have high interest rates, high mortgages, and balloon payments attached. When balloon payments are attached to home mortgages it is almost guaranteed in a few years you will be searching for a solution to repair your credit. There are very few home lenders willing to tell you the truth about the variety of home loans available. Most of the lenders are making money and you are a source of income. It is important to scope the terms & agreements carefully as well as reading all fine print on any loan contract before you sign. If you want to avoid bad credit and repair, you want to stay on the right path. Loans are agreements that are made between two parties and attached are interest rates and other fees. If you are applying for a home loan and want to avoid bad credit, it makes sense to learn what the fees include and how much those fees are. Anytime you take out a mortgage loan there are upfront fees attached. In some cases, you can get a home for little or no cost. Searching the marketplace can save you time and money.

The Ill Effects Of Climate Change

Now a days we hear about Climate Change more often than before. Climate change is a global phenomenon and the term “Climate Change" is indeed a straightforward expression for such a complex subject. In fact, it has more than we can comprehend from this phrase and that is why it is quite essential to go at defining climate change in today's scenario. In the present glossary of researchers and scientists, climate modification as a term is no longer in use and effect. The reason behind this is that we have come to realize the effect of the changes we make to our environment will eventually increase the temperature in many parts of the world, but at the same time will also be decrease in temperature for few parts of the planet. This however, creates a general imbalance in the climate of the world which in turn leads us to the phrase, “Climate Change." While wondering the effects of this phenomenon, the things you know of as climate modification is actually referred to as global a global phenomenon of climate change. However, with all the details and statistics we have in hand at present, we can definitely conclude that the world is unquestionably warming with the temperatures rising like never before. This is a global problem with many natural disasters started taking shape; the general awareness of this factor is really low. For the better understanding of the issues associated with this phenomenon, we require a simple definition in relation to the warming of the planet. And this definition needs to be the one that brings us the essence of this problem without compromising the simplicities. However, the easiest and most precise definition is that it is the effect greenhouse gases have on the earth's overall climate. Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide and methane, but are not limited to these two. While learning more about this issue, we need to understand few important facts associated with it. The first fact is that it is both a natural phenomena and one catalyzed by us. For instance, greenhouse gases are a natural part of the biosphere and would exist if man did not. In fact, these gases are a vital component to the existence of life on this planet. It is due to the existence of the greenhouse gases, the temperature on planet earth does not average zero degrees! These naturally occurring gases help to keep the temperature at a desirable 59 degrees. But, the climate change, which is due to the greenhouse gases, is not indeed natural. In fact, the problem we are facing is the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. These gases act as thermal blankets for the atmosphere. The more gas in the atmosphere, the thicker the blanket and the less heat escapes from earth. In the last 80years, we have been releasing these gases into our atmosphere and thus helping them to form a blanket. On the other hand, we are reducing forests around the planet, which are the natural plant collection that absorb greenhouse gases. This double whammy is starting to show negative results, the increased heating of our world, and thus the beginning of the dreaded climate change.

    Are You Sabotaging Your Career

My experience working with thousands of leaders world wide for the past two decades teaches me that most leaders are screwing up their careers. On a daily basis, these leaders are getting the wrong results or the right results in the wrong ways. Interestingly, they themselves are choosing to fail. They're actively sabotaging their own careers. Leaders commit this sabotage for a simple reason: They make the fatal mistake of choosing to communicate with presentations and speeches not leadership talks. In terms of boosting one's career, the difference between the two methods of leadership communication is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug. Speeches/presentations primarily communicate information. Leadership talks, on the other hand, not only communicate information, they do more: They establish a deep, human emotional connection with the audience. Why is the later connection necessary in leadership? Look at it this way: Leaders do nothing more important than get results. There are generally two ways that leaders get results: They can order people to go from point A to point B; or they can have people WANT TO go from A to B. Clearly, leaders who can instill "want to" in people, who motivate those people, are much more effective than leaders who can't or won't. And the best way to instill "want to" is not simply to relate to people as if they are information receptacles but to relate to them on a deep, human, emotional way. And you do it with leadership talks. Here are a few examples of leadership talks. When Churchill said, "We will fight on the beaches ... " That was a leadership talk. When Kennedy said, "Ask not what your country can do for you ... " that was a leadership talk. When Reagan said, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" That was a leadership talk. You can come up with a lot of examples too. Go back to those moments when the words of a leader inspired people to take ardent action, and you've probably put your finger on an authentic leadership talk. Mind you, I'm not just talking about great leaders of history. I'm also talking about the leaders in your organizations. After all, leaders speak 15 to 20 times a day: everything from formal speeches to informal chats. When those interactions are leadership talks, not just speeches or presentations, the effectiveness of those leaders is dramatically increased. How do we put together leadership talks? It's not easy. Mastering leadership talks takes a rigorous application of many specific processes. As Clement Atlee said of that great master of leadership talks, Winston Churchill, "Winston spent the best years of his life preparing his impromptu talks." Churchill, Kennedy, Reagan and others who were masters at giving leadership talks didn't actually call their communications "leadership talks", but they must have been conscious to some degree of the processes one must employ in putting a leadership talk together. Here's how to start. If you plan to give a leadership talk, there are three questions you should ask. If you answer "no" to any one of those questions, you can't give one. You may be able to give a speech or presentation, but certainly not a leadership talk. (1) DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE AUDIENCE NEEDS? Winston Churchill said, "We must face the facts or they'll stab us in the back." When you are trying to motivate people, the real facts are THEIR facts, their reality. Their reality is composed of their needs. In many cases, their needs have nothing to do with your needs. Most leaders don't get this. They think that their own needs, their organization's needs, are reality. That's okay if you're into ordering. As an order leader, you only need work with your reality. You simply have to tell people to get the job done. You don't have to know where they're coming from. But if you want to motivate them, you must work within their reality, not yours. I call it "playing the game in the people's home park". There is no other way to motivate them consistently. If you insist on playing the game in your park, you'll be disappointed in the motivational outcome. (2) CAN YOU BRING DEEP BELIEF TO WHAT YOU'RE SAYING? Nobody wants to follow a leader who doesn't believe the job can get done. If you can't feel it, they won't do it. But though you yourself must "want to" when it comes to the challenge you face, your motivation isn't the point. It's simply a given. If you're not motivated, you shouldn't be leading. Here's the point: Can you TRANSFER your motivation to the people so they become as motivated as you are? I call it THE MOTIVATIONAL TRANSFER, and it is one of the least understood and most important leadership determinants of all. There are three ways you can make the transfer happen. * CONVEY INFORMATION. Often, this is enough to get people motivated. For instance, many people have quit smoking because of information on the harmful effects of the habit * MAKE SENSE. To be motivated, people must understand the rationality behind your challenge. Re: smoking: People have been motivated to quit because the information makes sense. * TRANSMIT EXPERIENCE. This entails having the leader's experience become the people's experience. This can be the most effective method of all, for when the speaker's experience becomes the audience's experience, a deep sharing of emotions and ideas, a communing, can take place. There are plenty of presentation and speech courses devoted to the first two methods, so I won't talk about those. Here's a few thoughts on the third method. Generally speaking, humans learn in two ways: by acquiring intellectual understanding and through experience. In our schooling, the former predominates, but it is the latter which is most powerful in terms of inducing a deep sharing of emotions and ideas; for our experiences, which can be life's teachings, often lead us to profound awareness and purposeful action. Look back at your schooling. Was it your book learning or your experiences, your interactions with teachers and students, that you remember most? In most cases, your experiences made the most telling impressions upon you. To transfer your motivation to others, use what I call my "defining moment" technique, which I describe fully in my book, DEFINING MOMENT: MOTIVATING PEOPLE TO TAKE ACTION. In brief, the technique is this: Put into sharp focus a particular experience of yours then communicate that focused experience to the people by describing the physical facts that gave you the emotion. Now, here's the secret to the defining moment. That experience of yours must provide a lesson and that lesson is a solution to the needs of the people. Otherwise, they'll think you're just talking about yourself. For the defining moment to work (i. e., for it to transfer your motivation to them), the experience must be about them. The experience happened to you, of course. But that experience becomes their experience when the lesson it communicates is a solution to their needs. (3) CAN YOU HAVE THE AUDIENCE TAKE RIGHT ACTION? Results don't happen unless people take action. After all, it's not what you say that's important in your leadership communications, it's what the people do after you have had your say. Yet the vast majority of leaders don't have a clue as to what action truly is. They get people taking the wrong action at the wrong time in the wrong way for the wrong results. A key reason for this failure is they don't know how to deliver the all important "leadership talk Call to action". "Call" comes from an Old English word meaning "to shout." A Call to Action is a "shout for action." Implicit in the concept is urgency and forcefulness. But most leaders don't deliver the most effective Calls to action because they make three errors regarding it. First, they err by mistaking the Call to Action as an order. Within the context of The Leadership Talk, a Call to action is not an order. Leave the order for the order leader. Second, leaders err by mistaking the Call as theirs to give. The best Call to action is not the leader's to give. It's the people's to give. It's the people's to give to themselves. A true Call to action prompts people to motivate themselves to take action. The vast majority of leaders I've worked with are hampering their careers for one simple reason: They're giving presentations and speeches not leadership talks. You have a great opportunity to turbo charge your career by recognizing the power of leadership talks. Before you give a leadership talk, ask three basic questions. Do you know what the people need? Can you bring deep belief to what you're saying? Can you have the people take the right take action? If you say "no" to any one of those questions you cannot give a leadership talk. But the questions aren't meant to be stumbling blocks to your leadership but stepping stones. If you answer "no", work on the questions until you can say, "yes". In that way, you'll start getting the right results in the right way on a consistent basis.

Giving To God Series 1 Lesson 2

These lessons are designed to be easily used for personal Bible Study or as a guide for group Bible Studies. Each of the lessons will include a set of discussion questions at the end of the lesson, which can be used either privately for introspection or in a group setting as provocative discussion builders. The very first thing that God gave to man after He had created them was dominion over the all the living creatures that moved on the earth, and he gave to man every “herb bearing seed” and every “fruit of a tree yielding seed” for food. He told man to “Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth”. (Gen. 1: 28 30). Think about that for a moment. He GAVE man the command to replenish the earth, and GAVE man control over the living things, and He GAVE man the herbs and fruits and vegetables of the earth for food. Think about this: Once He had given that command, the control, and the means to do it, to the people of earth, could He have taken it back? In the next chapter in Genesis, we receive more detail about his gift and instructions: “And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Gen. 2: 16 17). So why give man everything but one tree, one fruit of one tree? Could it be symbolic (to man) that everything we have belongs to God, but He has GIVEN us the use of it? So by not eating of that one tree, man shows God that he recognizes that He is in control, that He gave it to man, that only He has the ability to create anything? You see, if man could create, if man were God’s equal, then the restriction would not have been necessary. Actually, it would have simply been a power trip, as we might say today. It would have been God simply exerting His Godship and Ultimate control over His creation (Not that there would be anything wrong there, either.) But by giving man control over everything except one thing, one tree that probably didn’t have any special characteristics the other trees didn’t have, except there was a virtual sign that said, “Don’t touch this”, the tree became symbolic of recognizing that God created and owned everything. Wasn’t Old Testament tithing much the same? Did God really need the Israelites to tithe to provide for the poor and the Levites (the priests of the day)? Of course not! He could have provided for the poor and the Levites the same way He provided for everyone else! But by requiring a tenth (or more), He simply reminded the people that everything was created by Him, given by Him, and under His authority. By tithing, the people recognized that what they had did not come from their own personal creativity and self, but rather was a gift from God. New Testament giving is much the same way. Although tithing is not a requirement today (we can give as much as we want, 20%, 30%, whatever!), we are admonished to give cheerfully: “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” (Paul, writing in II Cor. 9: 6 7). When we give, we recognize that God is truly God, that he is the true giver of everything, of all life and things. We do not give to appease an angry God, we give to recognize a loving God as more bountiful than ourselves. Questions for discussion: How do you feel about giving back to the Creator of the Universe? Do you see the fall of man, and God’s provision to give us back the life we lost, in a different light now than before reading this? Do you see that when we give God back a portion of our bounty, we recognize Him as the ultimate giver and creator? Note: Scripture references are from the KJV. Getting Sharp The Guide To An Active Lifestyle

Older, active Americans have become increasingly aware of the need to keep their minds active as they age. The key is to find the right balance of physical activity, diet and mental stimulation. The first two can seem relatively easy compared to the third. Getting your heart pumping regularly contributes to an overall healthy lifestyle. A good diet filled with lots of fruits and veggies has been a good idea ever since mom reminded you to finish your broccoli. Keeping the brain active, however, takes a little more thought. Younger generations take brain workouts for granted. From kindergarten to college, kids get quizzed and tested all the time. Learn this, memorize that, study this and solve that. Young parents also undergo a constant mental challenge from balancing work, home life and their kids' hectic extracurricular schedules. Somewhere in there, though, people can fall into a routine. It may take some effort to break out of it and make sure your brain is getting put through a good workout regimen. Crossword puzzles and sudoku always have been good alternatives for people who want their daily fix of mental stimulation. As the population ages, more and more companies are finding fun and creative ways to get people flexing their mental muscles. Nintendo, a company known for its video games, is now incorporating cognitive exercises in its latest offering. A new experience called "Brain Age™: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!," made for the portable Nintendo DS system, gives users a real mental workout, without the need to press a lot of complicated buttons common to some video games. It's a treadmill for the mind that fits into the lifestyles of the new generation of older adults. Baby boomers will likely have more active and dynamic retirement years than previous generations, says Dr. Elizabeth Zelinski, dean and executive director of Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California. "Americans can do a great deal to maintain and even improve their mental abilities," Zelinski says. "Aging is about taking on new challenges for our minds. Nintendo's 'Brain Age' is a great way for people to keep challenging themselves." "Brain Age" includes activities such as performing simple math problems and quick counting. It sounds simple, but the goal is to complete these tasks as quickly as possible. All of the puzzles challenge users to think on their feet. The software is available at online and local retailers, including Target and Wal Mart.
