    First Sheet Music

The Historic American Sheet Music, Rare, Book, Manuscript and Special Collections Library at Duke University struggles with the definition of sheet music. Though some might desire to relegate the use of the term “sheet music” to popular or modern music, The Library at Duke has discovered that “Especially in the mid nineteenth century, a publisher may have issued sacred and secular songs, Lieder, opera excerpts, potpourris, waltzes, marches and descriptive etudes side by side.” They go on to describe sheet music as the mere physical product of recording music on paper. Sheet music can also be described as a “score”. However it is described, sheet music is the way in which a reader (one who reads musical notation) can play a piece of music. Sheet music provides a special kind of potential entertainment. Musical scores, specifically those written for or including the piano, were very popular at the turn of the century as many private homes had pianos. Before radio became the preferred form of entertainment, regular people had to create their own entertainment. A new set of sheet music was like a new TV show, and allowed anyone who could play to entertain themselves with a new piece of music. Another popular and now defunct function of sheet music was as a carrier for art. In some cases, the art on the cover of the sheet music was as interesting and desirable as the music found inside. Music publishing (in America) began in the 1790’s. At that point it was not big business because unlike a century later, the average consumer did not have a piano in the house and, as America was still expanding, shipping was difficult and costly. It wasn’t until after the Civil War that the visual art on the cover of the sheet music became as important as the audible art found on the inside. One particular artist, E. T. Paul because particularly well known for his song choices and cover art. He began by commissioning color lithographs for his own pieces of composition. It is believed that much of his (wild) success was due less to the content of his music and more to his topic choice and choice of cover art. In the same way that cover art revolutionized the sale and advertising qualities of sheet music, cheap alternatives for shipping took this fledgling American industry from being strictly regional to being able to reach all over the country.

How To Upload Photos That Will Create Interest

So, you've got a great profile but, so far, no one seems interested. You've tried everything: enticing headlines, fun information about yourself, everything...except a photo. Did you know that members with profile pictures are 7 times more likely to receive a message? A picture really is worth a thousand words. Let's begin: there are two ways to upload the picture. If you know the name of your photo, you can simply type it in the box. If you don't know the name, however, don't despair. Click Browse? and search through your files until you find what you want. Click Open? and that should send the photo to your management site. Now, click Upload?. Your picture should, successfully, be on your profile. There is much more to this, however, than simply loading the picture. Here are some universally helpful hints that'll help you decide which photo you should use: If it's a profile picture, make sure it clearly shows your face. A blurry photo or one that only shows you in the background is not effective”showcase yourself! If you want to send a specific message about yourself, then chose a picture that matches that message. For example, if you say you are a funny individual but then select a photo of you frowning, it sends mixed messages this can turn potential suitors away. Don't get lost in the crowd; never use photos with a large number of people in them. This can confuse anyone looking at your profile. Try to find pictures that only display you or, at most, a very small group of people that you can easily be seen in. Rotate your photos every few weeks; this will not only keep your profile interesting but you can also garner attention from people who had overlooked you before. Use recent photos. A picture of you from college is fine....but only if you're still that age. Most importantly, smile! Now, once you've selected that perfect picture, you might need to scan it. Here are a few tips that can help this process run smoothly: When scanning your image, make sure you do a preview scan first. This will help the scanner locate the image and ensure you only copy the picture not the entire scanner bed. Photocopies often do not scan very well. If you have a scanner, it is best to scan the original image to achieve best quality. You might want to consider, once the image is on your computer, using the Cropping Tool. Cropping is an excellent way to remove unnecessary and distracting elements from your picture. After you have selected and scanned a photo, you can upload it onto your profile; however, there are certain guidelines to be remembered before you post a picture. They are as follows: The picture must be of you; do not try to pass a friend, family member, celebrity, etc off as yourself. The picture cannot contain any contact information; this can be potentially dangerous. Do not include phone numbers, addresses, etc. Do not include sexually graphic pictures; this rule covers touching yourself or others in a sexual way (this includes masturbation), sexual intercourse or the use of bodily fluids. Your picture can be rejected if it is copyrighted, unless you have permission from the original artist. Your picture can also be rejected if it is deemed to be offensive, obscene, or violent. The photo can, ultimately, be the most important part of your profile; chose it wisely and see the reactions it gets!

Keep Your Bladder Active And Bacteria Free

Have you ever wondered why we urinate? Urination occurs as a result of the removal of excess liquid and wastes from the blood in the form of urine. The liquids pass through the kidneys which are the organs responsible for the filtration of the said wastes from the bloodstream. Normally, urination is an easy, painless body function. But people who experience urinating with only very small amounts of liquid coupled with a burning sensation, the situation is really far from being normal. Chances are, these people are suffering from Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), the second most common type of infection in the body which affects the urinary tract. Urine is normally sterile. It is usually free of bacteria, viruses, and fungi and only contains fluids, salts, and waste products. However, when bacteria gets into the bladder or kidney, these microbes multiply in the urine and causes a bacterial infection in the urethra, the short tube where urine passes from the bladder to the outside of the body. This is called urethritis. Another type of UTI is cystitis which is a bacterial infection of the bladder. This is the most common type of UTI which causes minor discomfort and can be easily treated. Without proper treatment, it may lead to the third and more serious type of UTI which involves infection of the kidneys, known as pyeloniphritis. This type of UTI makes a person experience back pain, high fever and vomiting. Usually, women are more prone to UTI than men due to the differences in the shape and length of the urethra. Women have shorter urethras compared to men, where the opening is located closer to the rectum and vagina parts were bacteria are likely to be found. UTI can also be caused by an abnormality in the structure and/or function of the urinary tract. One of the most common functional problems encountered is called vesicoureteral reflux, a condition in which some urine flows backward, or refluxes, from the bladder into the ureters and even up to the kidneys. UTI is not contagious. However, during sexual intercourse, the bacteria in the vaginal area may be pushed into the urethra and eventually end up in the bladder, where urine provides a good environment for the bacteria to grow. For this reason, women who are sexually active often get UTI. Bacteria can also get through the urethra of women by wiping from back to front after a bowel movement, which can contaminate the urethral opening. The use of contraceptives, such as condoms treated with spermicide and diaphragms, may also increase the risk of getting a urinary tract infection. Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) like chlamydia may cause UTI like symptoms, such as pain during urination due to the inflammation and irritation of the urethra or vagina. Unlike UTI, STDs are contagious and when left untreated, STDs may lead to serious long term problems which includes pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. There are several symptoms associated with UTI. Symptoms of bladder infections include: · frequent urination · burning or pain during urination · the feeling of having to pee even though little or no urine actually comes out · pain in the lower abdomen · pain above the pubic bone (in women) · a full feeling in the rectum (in men) · bloody or foul smelling urine · mild fever · a general feeling of shakiness and fatigue With kidney infections, more serious symptoms involve: · high fever · chills · nausea and vomiting · abdominal pain · cloudy or bloody urine · back pain just above the waist The moment you realize that you have any symptoms of a urinary tract infection, immediately consult your doctor. Ignoring the symptoms will only worsen the condition. Early treatment makes it less uncomfortable and faster to heal. To prevent urinary tract infections, avoid holding urine for long periods of time. Keep the genital areas clean and dry. Women should wipe from front to back with toilet paper after every urination. Reverse the wiping directions after bowel movements to avoid spreading bacteria from the rectal area to the urethra. Change tampons and pads regularly during menstruation periods. Avoid bubble baths that can cause irritation of the vaginal area. Do not wear nylon underwear or wet swimsuits for long periods of time. Prolonged exposure to moisture in the genital area can cause fungal or bacterial infections. Choose underwear with cotton crotches. Skip using feminine hygiene sprays or douches which can irritate the urethra. Sexually active people should visit the bathroom both before and within 15 minutes after intercourse. After the sexual intercourse, gently wash the genital area to remove any bacteria. Use a water soluble lubricant such as K Y Jelly. Keep the bladder active and bacteria free by drinking lots of water everyday. Always bear in mind that urinary tract infections may be uncomfortable and often painful, but it can easily be prevented through proper hygiene.

    Are You A Problem Gambler

Although gambling addiction affects less than 1 percent of all people, it is an issue taken very seriously by online casinos around the world. A problem gambler is someone who feels this compulsive need to keep gambling despite the affects it is having on his/her life. There are certain criteria that define a problem gambler, including, but not limited to, gambling until every dollar is gone, gambling a longer period of time than planned, thinking about gambling causes you to lose sleep, you have tried to and can't stop gambling and you leave bills unpaid and spend all your money on gambling. Addiction gamblers don't always necessarily gamble in regular methods, at casinos or lotteries, for example. People with this problem will bet and gamble on anything, even meaningless bets with friends or coworkers. This contradicts the idea that land based and online casinos encourage and create problem gamblers. If there isn’t a casino online or nearby, a problem gamble will bet in other ways. If a person is having trouble determining if they, or someone they know, has a gambling problem there are many tests online from various problem gambling institutes that they can accurately determine if they are affected. Casinos and online casinos have also taken steps to identify and help problem gamblers, although they acknowledge the fact that most problem gamblers identify themselves first and seek help. If you think that you or a loved one may have a gambling disorder, there are also support groups like Gamblers Anonymous (gamblersanonymous. org/). This article was written on behalf of Online Casino ( online casino. com). At Online Casino we are dedicated to helping problem gamblers and completely advocate responsible gaming.

The Dangers Of Being Exposed To Cigar Smoke 421

The Dangers of Being Exposed to Cigar Smoke We have all heard about the dangers of inhaling second hand smoke. Many people wonder if the dangers of inhaling cigar smoke are just as dangerous, or more. Unfortunately, it appears that being exposed to secondhand smoke from a lit cigar can be just as dangerous—or more—than regular cigarette smoke. All secondhand smoke emitted by tobacco products are classified as environmental tobacco smoke. Environmental tobacco smoke refers to all the secondhand smoke released from tobacco products that are lit, such as cigars or cigarettes. Research indicates that the smoke from cigars and cigarettes releases many of the same types of irritants. Both cigar and cigarette environmental tobacco smoke contain nicotine, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and ammonia. The environmental tobacco smoke from cigars and cigarettes also releases well known carcinogens such as vinyl chlorine, benzene, arsenic, hydrocarbons, and nitrosamines. Cigars, because of their size, usually release more environmental tobacco smoke than cigarettes. Being around cigar smoke, then, can pose more of a health threat than inhaling secondhand smoke from a lit cigarette. Even though both cigars and cigarettes release similarly toxic environmental tobacco smoke, there are some key differences between the two. These differences are related to the very different ways that cigars and cigarettes are manufactured. The production of cigars consists of a long process of fermentation and aging. During the production and fermentation process, large amounts of carcinogens are produced. Once a cigar has been fermented and aged, they are wrapped in a nonporous wrapper that keeps the cigar from burning too quickly. The fermentation process and nonporous wrapper both contribute to the high concentrations of carcinogens in the smoke of al it cigar. When a cigar is lit, the carcinogenic compounds produced during the fermentation process are released. The nonporous wrapper also contributes to an unclean burn that is high in carcinogens. Another reason why cigars produce greater amounts of carcinogens is in their girth and length. Cigars are simply bigger than cigarettes. Their size allows them to release much more smoke, and in turn, much higher concentrations of toxins and irritants. Also, cigars are designed to be smoked much more slowly than regular cigarettes, and cigar smokers are encouraged to take their time and enjoy the relaxing experience. This results in longer smoke times, and obviously, the creation of much more smoke. It is advised for all non smokers to avoid areas where cigars are being smoked. If you smoke cigars, make sure to do so in a well ventilated area. 421 PPPPP

    Christmas Article 38

    38. Christmas Carols The tradition of caroling and Christmas carols is believed to have originated in England when wandering musicians would go from town to town and visit castles and other homes of the rich to give impromptu performances. But there also is the belief that singing carols at Christmas likely came from the group of angels, shepherds and Wise Men who visited Jesus at his birth, because they worshiped the holy child, sang and proclaim praises unto Him. And after their visit, they continued their proclamations in the street. The origin of the word carol however, is thought to come from the word 'caroller,' which is a French word that describes a circle dance with singers. And from the twelfth through the fourteenth centuries, the carol was highly popular as a dance song. The use of carols then evolved to festivals where they were sung as processional songs and others were used as part of religious mystery plays in Europe. Some traditional qualities of a carol was that the words expressed should celebrate a topic that was seasonal, have verses and a chorus arranged alternately and have music that was suitable for dancing. Although many of the carols that are now popular at Christmas time are very old, there are others from earlier times that didn't survive. During the 17th century when the Protestants, led by Oliver Cromwell were in power in England, many Christmas caros were banned and consequently some were never heard again. The Christmas carols that survived the Protestant Reformation period didn't become very popular again until the mid 19th century to the start of the 20th century. Many of the Christmas carols that were banned, and early Christmas carols in general, had lyrics that expressed joyous and merry themes instead of the serious somber words found in church hymns. During the time when carols were banned, some composers and musicians wrote non religious songs that had highly varied choral music, which they called carols, for Christmas. After Christmas carols again became popular, many of those songs were re arranged with new Christian lyrics and used by the church. Making changes to Christmas carols continues in a different way today with pop artistes singing the carols to different tunes and melodies to give them a style that characterizes the particular artiste. Having Christmas carols with tunes of contemporary or popular music of today means that they are also more likely to survive because younger listeners will be interested in hearing any music that is done by their favorite or other popular singers. The popularity of Christmas carols in the United States increased in the 19th century, as it did in England, because many of the traditions related to Christmas came to the United States from England. The United States and England also have closely linked religious observances, which also accounts for the popularity and similarity of Christmas carols that are enjoyed in both countries. Today, radio stations are the first to play Christmas carols, usually starting toward mid November, to signal the coming season. At the start of December when the Christmas season official begins, mall stores and other retail establishments will begin to pipe Christmas carols and songs through their places of business. The singing of carols at churches, schools, and by groups performing at malls usually will be a common sight starting in early to mid December. Carol singing as a part of Nativity plays and concerts at churches and schools is usually in full swing by mid December as the Christmas season gets into high gear and the countdown to Christmas Day begins. Whether it's the traditional tune or popular makeovers of Christmas carols that you enjoy, listening to them is part of an old Christmas tradition. And any version of a Christmas carol that is played will serve the purpose of putting you in a festive mood for Christmas that you may even want to dance, just like the music of original carols was meant to do.

Off Page Search Engine Optimization Seo Primer

In the earlier years of search engine optimization, it was all about on page optimization. Things like the page title, Meta tags, heading tags, comment tags, and anchor text were the only things that mattered. Keyword stuffing could easily get your website to the top of the search engines results page. If I wanted the number one position, all I had to do was copy my competitor’s page, add my keyword one more time, and viola – I’d rank first. These days, things aren’t quite that easy. In order to obtain top positioning in the search results, your website has to gain to credibility or “web cred” in order to be recognized as important. Optimize Your Domain Name As of this writing, appears that the search engines do weight the fact that your domain name has your keywords in it. Problem is, many SEO professionals and amateurs are exploiting this by registering domains with the keywords in it, separated by dashes. Nobody knows how long the search engines will continue to weight this factor, but none the less, it’s probably not a bad idea to include a keyword or phrase in your domain name, but don’t get out of hand: . please let google ban my site because of all these words. com The number of years your domain has, and will be, registered for also has an effect on search engine rankings. If you have an older domain name, it is generally concluded that the website is not spam and will probably be around for years to come. This makes sense – Google should give higher priority to a website that’s been around for 5 years, than give the high ranking to a brand new, untested website. It may be a good idea to acquire a domain name that been around for a few years and also contains one of your keywords. The downside is that this option may be expensive. If you don’t have the budget for that, Google also seems to give credit for the number of years that the domain is pre registered. I’ve looked at some data, and it seems that if you register your domain for a few years out, Google assumes you don’t have a fly by night website and you may be entitled to a slightly higher ranking. Given the miniscule cost of registering a domain name these days, it’s probably not a bad idea to register your domain name for 3 years rather than 1. Page Rank Google assigns each web page a Page Rank based on the number and quality of inbound links you have pointing to your website. You can view your website’s page rank by downloading the Google Toolbar. Your page rank will be displayed as a green bar measuring from 1 to 10. Don’t worry if you only have a Page Rank of 1 or 2 – most websites do. In order to get your number up (4 or 5 is pretty good), you’ll have to get other websites to link to you. Quality Counts More Than Quantity As soon as webmasters realized the importance of back links, numerous schemes were hatched in an attempt to build up thousands back links very quickly. Google has since caught on, and if your website acquires too many low quality links too fast, you may get penalized. Here are some tips to obtain the best quality back links: One way links are better than reciprocal links. Reciprocal links are being de valued because it is not natural linking – it’s an arrangement between the webmasters. If you can afford it, it may be a good idea to buy some one way links to your website. Get links from pages with a high Page Rank because some of that will pass through to your site, increasing your own site’s Page Rank. Get links from sites in a related industry or geographical location. I do a lot of web design in my home town of Windsor, Ontario. Therefore, I make sure that I buy or trade links from other web design related sites, Canadian, Ontario, and Windsor directories. Google will see that your site is relevant if you do this. Make sure your keywords are included in the link from other sites. If your keyword is included in the anchor text, Google will assume that your site relates to that particular keyword. Get a listing in Open Project Directory (DMOZ), if you can. Only the best sites get into DMOZ, and it gives your site a lot of credibility in the eyes of the search engines. Don’t inter link your websites! If you think you can just link all of your own websites together and improve your Page Rank, forget it. Google will see that the IP address of all domains is the same, and, either give you little or no credit, or if you have a lot of sites inter linked, penalize you. Let last tip I’ll leave you with is: make sure to maintain your links. Google, for one, does not immediately give you credit for your links. The age of the link plays an important role, and as the months go by, those links which were maintained for long periods of time will carry a lot of weight. Good Luck!

    Detoxification Explained

Detoxification refers to the removal of toxic substance from human body by various methods. Detoxification takes place through various organs of the human body like lungs, liver, kidney and skin. Detoxification is also done by artificial methods like dialysis, acupuncture detoxification and chelation therapy. Alternative medicine therapies like detox diets also claim to detoxify the human body. The function of the liver, lungs, kidney and skin is to remove any harmful substance from the blood stream. Lungs detoxify by exhaling. Liver breaks down the toxins into smaller compounds that are then cleaned by the skin and the kidneys. Chelation Therapy uses chelating agents to remove metal ions from the body. Metals like mercury, lead, uranium, americium, polonium etc are harmful and act like poison in the body. Chelating agents that are used for detoxification are: •D Penicillamine •Deferosamine •EDTA : Dietheylene triamine pentaacetic acid •DMSA : Dimercaptosuccinic acid •BAL : British Anti Lewisite •DMPS : Dimercapto propane sulfonate •ALA: Alpha lipoic acid •Ca Na2 – EDTA : Calcuium disodium versante •Deferoxamine Detox Diet. It is a dietary course in which food consumption habits are changed to remove toxins and contaminants from the body. Proponents of this method claim improved health, vitality, immunity, weight loss etc. The various methods used are: •Calorific restriction. •Increased consumption of certain types of fish like salmon. •Fasting methods like water fasting and juice fasting. •Consuming certain herbs. In detox diets veganism is advocated in which fruits and vegetables form the majority component. Drinking more water and limiting alcohol is also advocated. Acupuncture Detoxification. Detoxification also refers to drug rehabilitation to treat alcoholism and drug addictions. The process in these types of detoxification involves abstinence to remove the drug completely from the body and this is usually accompanied by social and environmental support. This support is required to prevent the patient undergoing withdrawal and depression. A non drug detoxification method widely used is acupuncture detoxification. Acupuncture detoxification was very successful during the 70’s cocaine plague in the US. It involves a five point auricular (outer ear) protocol developed in the US by Dr Michael Smith. Presently in the US this acupuncture treatment and training is provided through the National Acupuncture Detoxificcation Association. Studies have found that patients are more likely to complete the treatment and stay away from drugs and alcohols. Dialysis. Dialysis is a life support treatment used to detoxify the blood when a patient’s kidneys fail. Kidneys remove waste products from the blood like potasium, acid, excess fluid and urea in the form of urine. Dialysis machine does both waste removal and fluid removal. The method used to remove the toxins from the blood is by osmosis. Blood is passed on one side of semipermeable membrane and the dialysis fluid is passed on the other side. The dialysis fluid collects the toxins from the blood by osmosis through the semi permeable membrane. Detoxification is done by various established methods like dialysis, acupuncture detoxification, chelation therapy etc. Some alternate medicine methods like detox diets also claim to purify the blood.
