    Choosing The Right Lift Chair

For people who are suffering from diabetes, knee problems, hip problems, shoulder weakness, leg swelling, and arthritis may find lift chairs a device that will make their lives easier and more comfortable. These lift chairs are also beneficial to stroke victims, as well as for those who are recovering from surgery. Lift chairs are typically made like any ordinary sitting chairs. However, a lift chair comes with a power motor that will help lift up the chair to assist the occupant get up from a sitting pose. Because a lift chair is of great importance, choosing the appropriate lift chair is a must. This selection may be somehow difficult so here are some factors that you might want to consider when comparing lift chairs and buying one. Style and Color Lift chairs can also be attractive supplements to any home dйcor. Hence, style and color is an essential factor. Generally, lift chairs may look like typical accent chairs, love seats, sofas, or recliners, while a few may even appear as beds. Style and color of the lift chair must complement or accentuate the interior design of your home. Dimension (Size and Height) Another essential factor that must be considered in buying a lift chair is its height and size. The dimension of the lift chair must be appropriate for the one who will use it. A lift chair that is too small or too large may be uncomfortable for the occupant. Hence, it will be a great help if the person who will eventually use it can try sitting on the chair before actually purchasing it. Weight of the User Lift chairs, depending on the brand or model, may vary in terms of weight capacities. In choosing a lift chair, consider one that is strong enough to seat the occupant. Typical lift chairs can seat users who weigh at most 375 pounds. However, lift chairs that are heavy duty types can accommodate users up to 700 pounds or those who are exceptionally taller. Power Source There are lift chairs that make use of battery packs to function. Others need to be plugged into conventional power outlets. Both power sources are good power suppliers. Just make certain that whatever you choose will be convenient for the end user. Most lift chairs that are heavy duty utilize dual motors. This is to ensure a more powerful operation. Accessories When all of the aforementioned factors are already met, you might want to include other accessories to add to your chosen lift chair. For additional comfort, massage and heat can be added to the seat (or both the back and seat) of the lift chair. Head and lumbar pillows are also great options. Some lift chairs may also be added with side pockets for easy accessibility, as well as hand controls for more convenience. By now, you already know what features to look for when buying a lift chair. Always keep in mind that what matters most importantly is that the individual for whom the lift chair is intended to.

Pcs Or Gaming Consoles A Debate

: Digital games from the basic of tetris, super Mario, ping pong and other flash based games to massively multiplayer online role playing games can be played for free or after paying some membership fees on both specialized consoles and on your good old personal computer (PC) Since gaming consoles have developed web capabilities between August and December of 2002, the debate on which option is better, has gained steam. Given the enormous popularity of gaming consoles such as PlayStation 2 and Xbox, some industry analysts have suggested that PC gaming has seen its day and that consoles will be dominating force in future. But PC gamers have seen such claims biting dust since the days of Nintendo. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of gaming consoles. Console Advantages • Cost Advantage: Good PCs cost much more than the consoles. The Xbox currently sells for around $200, often with a couple games in the bundle, while it's easy to spend that much or more on a quality PC video card alone. • No Fuss: With consoles, just plug it in and start playing. No operating systems, drivers to deal with and to top it all, there is no more heartburn of finding a game incompatible with your system after buying it with much anticipation. • Multiplayer gaming made easy: Just connect your console to Internet through a DSL or Cable Internet connection and get into a multiplayer game. • Play where you want to: Play it on the couch, your bedroom, even bathroom with a gaming console. No more sitting on dedicated table. • Easily gettable games: since consoles don’t have copying ability, the console games are more readily rented and returned to the retailer than PC games which are easy to copy. • Easy learning: Console games tend to have a relatively low learning curve. You might need fast thumbs, but you certainly won't need to spend hours in a tutorial trying to learn how to operate basic game functions. Console Disadvantages • Difficult updation: If some of the components inside the box become dated, the whole console need to be replaced to keep playing newer games. No remedies for that. This way you need to invest quite a hefty amount with each turn in technology. No such problems with PCs. • Lack of versatility: Computers can do whole lot of things besides supporting online games. On the other hand consoles perform only one task really well. Some console manufacturers may try to make them a little more flexible, but it's unlikely they will ever support near the selection of applications that is available for PCs. • Lack of inter connectivity: It is the biggest grouse against gaming consoles. There is a clear lack of inter connectivity between the different console brands because of commercial compulsions. When it comes to online play of flash based games or multiplayer strategy games for free, players can pit against each other only on a specific network of people playing on same types of consoles. There is no way for console gamers to jump into a fray on one of the countless servers available. The PS2 has made some progress in this area, forging the way for cross platform gaming between PS2 and PC users, but only one or two titles support this right now. Of course, there are many things to consider before deciding on a gaming platform. Foremost among these is deciding which games you want to play, how much money you want to spend, and whether or not you need a PC for other purposes. Go for a good computer if you want to do multi tasking, but for a die hard gamer nothing less than the latest console would do, would it? Or better still, check out Play Online Games Free. com that offer even the most popular games such as tetris click here for free tetris to play now, super Mario, ping pong and other flash based games or multiplayer strategy games for free. You can get a good practice at computer gaming, don’t have to download anything and you get everything for free! Now aren’t you game for that?

Planting And Caring For Flower Bulbs

There is nothing quite as welcome as those beautiful spring flowers that seem to emerge from nowhere to welcome the arrival of spring. Bulb type flowers are really unique plants, because they spend most of their days resting quietly beneath the surface of the soil. Then right on schedule, up they come, full of bloom and vigor, and then almost as fast as they came, they go. Except for the green leafy part of the plant that tends to linger longer than we would like them to. Despite their short bloom time and unattractive foliage after the blooms are gone, they are still a wonderful addition to any landscape. But how should you care for them? First let’s talk about how to use them in your landscape. Flowers of all kinds are best when planted in groupings. Many people buy 25 or 50 bulbs and just go around the yard planting helter skelter. That’s fine if that’s what you want, but when planted that way they tend to blend in with the landscape and really don’t show up well at all. When you plant them in large groups they are a breathtaking showpiece. In the early spring start thinking about where you would like to create a bed for flower bulbs. Prepare the bed by raising it with good rich topsoil, and if at all possible add some well composted cow manure. Do this in the spring while you are in the gardening mood; you may not be in the fall. Over the summer fill the bed with annual flowers to keep the weeds down, and to pretty up your yard for the summer. Come fall all you have to do is pull out the annuals and plant your bulbs to the depth recommended on the package. If you think you could have a proble with squirrels digging up the bulbs and eating them, you can also wrap the bulbs in steel wool, leaving just the tip of the bulb exposed so it can grow out of the little wire cage you’ve created. Or you can just plant the bulbs and then cover the bed with chicken wire or plastic fencing until the bulbs start to grow in the spring. When the bulbs come up in the spring and start blooming, you should clip off the blooms as they start to wither. This keeps the bulb from producing seeds, which requires a lot of energy, and you want the bulb to use all of its available energy to store food in preparation for the bulb’s resting period. Once the bulbs are completely done blooming you don’t want to cut off the tops until they are withered and die back. The million dollar question is how to treat the tops until that happens. Many people bend them over and slip a rubber band over them, or in the case of bulbs like Daffodils tie them with one of the long leaves. This seems to work because it is a very common practice among many experienced gardeners. However, Mike is about to rain on the parade. I strongly disagree with this theory because back about 6th grade we learned about photosynthesis in science class. To recap what we learned, and without going into the boring details, photosynthesis is the process of the plant using the sun’s rays to make food for itself. The rays from the sun are absorbed by the foliage and the food making process begins. In the case of a flower bulb this food is transported to the bulb beneath the ground and stored for later use. So basically the leaves of the plant are like little solar panels. Their job is to absorb the rays from the sun to begin the process known as photosynthesis. If we fold them over and handcuff them with their hands behind their back, they are not going to be able to do their job. It’s like throwing a tarpaulin over 80% of a solar panel. In order for the leaves to absorb the rays from the sun, the surface of the foliage has to be exposed to the sun. On top of that, when you bend the foliage over, you are restricting the flow of nutrients to the bulb. The veins in the leaves and the stem are a lot like our blood vessels. If you restrict them the flow stops. You decide. I’ve presented my case. Bending them over seems to work, but I’ve spent a lot of money on my bulbs. I want them running at full speed. What I do is clip the blooms off once they are spent, and just leave the tops alone until they are yellow and wilted. If they are still not wilted when it’s time to plant my annual flowers, I just plant the annuals in between the bulbs. As the bulbs die back the annuals tend to grow and conceal them. If one shows through I clip it off. It seems to work well for me.

    Bump Upselling In Marketing

: This is probably one of the most easiest, quickest and most profitable techniques that business people have at their disposal yet it is rarely used. Let me explain what upselling is. Upselling is basically offering the customer more at the point of sale Let me give you some simple examples of upselling in the real world. Say you run a small website design company and you have a person on the phone ready to order a simple 3 page website which cost Ј200. While you’re talking to the person you could offer them an extra website page plus 5 extra email addresses for an additional price of Ј50. The normal price for this package is Ј300. You tell them you are offering this because you wish to thank them for using your company and this offer is only available right now. Let’s do some figures now… Before you used your upselling you had 100 people purchase your 3 page site at Ј200. 100 x Ј200 = Ј20,000 = Ј5,000 Profit (25%) Total profit = Ј5,000 Now because the upselling offer only costs an extra Ј10 to set up you make the remaining Ј40 in pure profit! Let’s say 30% take your upselling offer… 70 x Ј200 = Ј14,000 = Ј3,500 Profit (25%) 30 x Ј250 = Ј7,500 = Ј2,700 Profit (36%) Total profit = Ј6,200 So with a simple upselling offer you could add an extra Ј1,200 profit for every 100 clients you sell to! That’s an increase of 24% which was virtual effortless! Things to remember · Always tell the consumer why you are offering this special price and clearly & passionately explain the benefits for taking this offer. · Tell the consumer that this is a limit offer only available right now! This will create a sense of urgency in the consumers mind. Gordon McNevin YourMarketing. co. uk

    Buying Furniture At Yard Sales

Buying furniture pieces at yard sales offers many options, but you must look closely to know what you’re getting. Are you interested in trying your hand at some creative furniture painting? If you don’t already have an old piece of furniture to practice on, shopping yard sales is the best way to come up with a piece. If you are buying the yard sale furniture for the sake of practicing your creative idea, buy away! If you are looking for a particular piece to use, take time to look the furniture over to make sure you are getting a solid piece at a good deal. For instance, if you want to buy a small dresser for a guest room and want to give it a country look, your first concern should be the stability of the furniture. You can give almost any style the look you want, as long as the furniture is sturdy and in good condition. Look to see if any of the wood is buckling or if the piece has any deep scratches that can’t be sanded out. If you want it to have an old look, the scratches might not matter so much to you. The buckling, however, might be a sign of warped drawers that are hard to open or close. Warped furniture is not usually very functional. If the furniture you are looking at is a sofa, loveseat or chair there are additional considerations you should keep in mind. Will you be using the furniture as it is or do you plan to give it a fresh coat of paint or some new fabric treatment? Does it look clean? Ask the seller if the furniture has been used recently in a home or if it has been in storage. If it has been stored, ask if the storage unit was climate controlled. If not, you may find yourself dealing with pest issues or mold down the line. Make sure you look the seating over good – check out its frame, springs, cushions and the over all wear. If you think it is in good shape and can get a good deal, go for it! If you are taking up furniture shopping through yard sales as a hobby, learn all you can about various types of furniture. The knowledge will help you separate a good deal from a great find. Plus, if you plan to recycle your yard sale findings, you don’t want to strip and paint an antique, one of a kind headboard. When you know your furniture – what is of special value and what is just a trash to treasure item – you can save yourself the heartache associated with finding out the dresser you just painted a Dr. Seuss scene on was actually by a famous craftsman. Visit your local library to check out books on antique or unique furniture. Then, keep your eyes open when you are hitting the yard sales the following weekend – you’ll know a good deal when you see one!

    A Guide To Dream Interpretation

Most of us dream. But only a very small percentage of us understands that dreams hold much importance and opportunity for our self growth, improvement and self discovery. But many mystics of both Eastern and Western origins are aware of the fact that dreams hold a wealth of untapped knowledge. Because of its inherently vague nature, dreams and the art of interpreting them never entered mainstream sciences. Jungian psychology is the closest mainstream science that took dreams seriously. This article is a concise description of the method of dream interpretation that I use. There are several points/guidelines to take note. 1. The dreams are often symbolic representations of what we are experiencing or are about to experience in the near future. I have found that my dreams often convey messages of occurrences that will most likely happen within a month or so. 2. Usually the people that we encounter in the dream symbolize the different aspects/characteristics of ourselves. For example: a woman may represent a feminine aspect of oneself even when one is male in the waking hours. Much of our repressed tendencies also tend to manifest themselves as characters in dreams as well. Have you ever wondered why we sometimes appear and behave so differently in our dreams. Well, my take is that dreaming offers an outlet for us to be 'somebody else' that we never had the opportunity to be during our waking hours. 3. Often how we feel and the emotion we felt during the dream reveals and conveys much about the meaning of the symbols. Intuition and the willingness to examine ourselves with brutal honesty are two very important factors for successful analysis. Below is a list of commonly encountered symbols. In my opinion, we should always take into consideration the fact that symbols hold certain semantics and meanings that are specific to individuals. Thus the interpretations of symbols are not generic and therefore there can be no hard and fast rules with regards to dream analysis. Common dream symbolism Water associated with emotion. Ocean or any large body of water often represents the subconscious mind. The state of the sea often is an indication of the emotional state as well Eating/digesting Trying to understand an issue/situation Walking associated with learning and assimilating. Path, road or pavement symbolizes life or spiritual Path/journey House symbolizes our self. Within the house, the various rooms could represent the various aspects of self. Snake symbolizes knowledge. Tree and forest subconscious feelings that governs our emotions Bridge a transitional phase or period of transformation / change Below is an example of a dream and its interpretation. Like any other types of skills, dream interpretation is an art in which one's proficiency improves with experience. Dream Miss A was visiting a foreign country. She boarded a train that has a stop in a shopping complex that meanders through mountains and terrains. She remembered telling the train driver that she wanted to alight in the shopping centre so that she can find her way home. Instead of alighting at the intended destination, she alighted at a strange place. She had difficulty getting to her destination. She contacted her partner (boyfriend). Though they communicated through the phone, she was still stuck and lost in that unfamiliar place. By this time, she was starting to get depressed. In the moment of depression, she woke up from the dream. Symbolism involved Foreign country unknown knowledge, new experience Train accelerated learning and understanding Through mountains and terrains ups and downs Find the way home spiritual path Train in charge – guiding aspect Her partner – male/ mental aspect Queen shopping center station – an intermediate stage that must be attained. Interpretation Miss A is currently experiencing and/or learning something that is still unknown to her. It is something that is rather difficult for her to grasp and apply. She is/will be experiencing some feelings of ups and downs. However, if understood, the newfound understanding and knowledge could significantly accelerate her self growth and discovery. However, for the time being, it is something not within her experience yet (as symbolized by alighting at a strange place instead of the designated station). When she tried contacting her male partner (which symbolizes using her mental reasoning), she was still confused and thus became depressed. Well, that's all for a quick lesson in dream interpretation. I hope it is informative and beneficial. Happy Dreaming...

55 Division A Lesson In Community Policing In The Beach

As always, Gene Domagala is the perfect person to make connections. With the date for my photo exhibition rapidly approaching and the need to finalize my articles and get the photos ready, I had not planned to do any further interviews, but Gene suggested that one organization could not be missing from my article series about the Beach: Toronto Police Service 55 Division, an organization with whom all the special events organizers work regularly. In his words 55 Division is extremely supportive of the Beach and a very positive force in the community. Gene made a phone call to the station, and within minutes of the phone call I hopped in my car to drive to Dundas and Coxwell Avenues to meet the officers at 55 Division. Gene introduced me to Superintendent Wayne Peden, the head of the station and after introducing the Celebrate Toronto project Superintendend Peden started to give me a general overview of 55 Division. He explained that the policing area of 55 Division extends from the Don River in the west and to Victoria Park Avenue in the east, and from Danforth Avenue in the north to Lake Ontario in the south. Superintendent Peden added that the police play a critical role in all the public events in the Beach, including the Beaches Jazz Festival, the Easter Parade and the Ashbridges Bay Fireworks. He used to work in this area in the 1980s and was just transferred back to this station last year. According to Superintendent Peden the Beach is a very safe area, with the main concerns being traffic and parking. He described the Beach as an excellent place to live and work. Many police offers want to work at this station, and Superintendent Peden enjoys his new location. 55 Division has about 235 employees including front line officers, detectives and investigative offers as well as community response officers who work with the community to resolve issues. Examples could include barking dogs, or driveway disputes, or teenagers that might be up to mischief. The idea is to resolve issues before they become problems. During big events 55 Division officers work with the organizing committees of the respective events to ensure that the festival or the parade are going to run smoothly with minimal inconvenience to the locals. During major events for example, all the main streets north and south of Queen Street East have to be blocked off, and this is 55 Division’s responsibility. Once the roads are closed, the organizers take over and handle things from there. Superintendent Peden started to fill me in on some of the community issues that are going on in 55 Division: from volleyball programs for teenagers from at risk communities to school safety and anti bullying education programs, officers from 55 Division are involved in a wide variety of community endeavours about which I would shortly learn more. The Superintendent added that his station has a very good working relationship with the community and the politicians in the area. 55 Division strives to provide a strong visible presence and to be recognized as an integral part of the community. As he had to go, Superintendent Peden handed me over to Sergeant John Spanton who was going to explain things to me I more detail. He explained that there are several different units within 55 Division: a Primary Response Unit (PRU) that involves first line policing, emergency call response and apprehension of criminals. In addition community problems and outreach is handled by the Community Response Unit (CRU). Sergeant Spanton added that the division has one officer who is in charge of educational outreach in elementary schools; in addition two full time officers handle the liaison with local high schools. One of the important mandates of the Toronto Police Service is to encourage greater community integration. In addition a concerted effort has been made to attract more visible minorities and women into the police force. Sergeant Spanton explained that today many of the officers that are being hired are quite a bit older than what used to be the case in the past. The recruiting process takes life experience into consideration, and Toronto’s demographic diversity is increasingly being reflected in the faces of the Toronto Police Service. A wide variety of different ethnic and cultural groups are represented within Sergeant Spanton’s own team of officers. More officers with different language skills are being hired as well to be able to communicate with the various immigrant groups that call Toronto their home. Another officer joined us: Regina La Borde is a 15 year veteran with the Toronto Police Force and now a full time Elementary School Liason Officer. After many years of front line policing she has become a full time educator and crime prevention officer for 55 Division. Her curriculum includes topics such as traffic safety rules and not talking to strangers which are taught to children in junior and senior kindergarden. In Grade 2 safety and street proofing continues. Topics such as what to do when you get lost and telling your parents at all times where you are and what you are doing get covered. The curriculum for Grade 4 includes Internet safety and cyber bullying. The concept of never talking to any strangers, even online, is emphasized as well. In Grade 5 bullying becomes the key topic while drug awareness takes centre stage in Grade 6. Students learn about the different types of drugs, such as alcohol, marijuana, cocaine or ecstasy; they also get educated about the drugs' biochemical effects as well as about the legal consequences that can happen if they get involved in drug use. In Grade 8 the focus is on youth violence and gangs to prepare students for what they might be facing in high school. Materials such as videotapes and Powerpoint presentations are used to illustrate the concepts, and the entire curriculum is presently being updated to reflect current realities. Melatonin To Take Or Not To Take

Getting sufficient sleep is essential to achieve good health. The body needs sleep to rest both the mind and body and restore energy. Sleep is the time when the body repairs itself—through sleep, the cells and tissues that have been damaged repairs itself. In addition to these health benefits, the body boosts and builds up the immune system through sleep. The immune system may experience breakdown and result to the development of different ailments and extended recovery times. Medical studies show that sleep helps improve the functions of the immune system. However, there are many factors that may hinder individuals to have adequate sleep and therefore further hamper health developments. Medical studies show that depression, anxiety, and low levels of melatonin may cause sleep difficulties. Medical studies show that throughout their lives, human beings produces a sleep hormone called melatonin, with the highest production produced during childhood. As people age, the production of melatonin declines, that is why additional melatonin supplementation as sleep aid is encouraged by many doctors to their elderly patients. This hormone works by regulating the body's internal clock that may activate the occurrence of sleep. Additional studies show that melatonin supplementation may delay the aging process of human beings. This is possible because these supplements may boosts the immune system and contains more antioxidants than vitamin C or E or beta carotene. Antioxidants in melatonin may destroy cell damaging compounds called free radicals that can lead to heart disease, cataracts, and other age related ailments. More research however is needed to find out it melatonin helps prevent these conditions. However, like other supplementation, melatonin may also bring side effects. Common side effects of melatonin may include headaches, drowsiness, irritability, and reduced alertness. This supplement may also increase blood pressure in individuals who are taking blood pressure lowering medicines that contain nifedipine. In addition to these ill effects, melatonin supplementation may also decrease the levels of reproductive hormones among pregnant, breast feeding, or women who want to conceive. Instead of taking over the counter or prescription medication sleep aid, doctors advise individuals to partake in physical activities and diets composed of vegetables and fruits. Many fruits and vegetables contain tryptophan, an amino acid which promotes the production of melatonin. Other foods that are high in tryptophan are turkey, milk. whole grains, bananas, and eggs. Eating food in complex carbohydrates along with tryptophan promoting food may enable this substance to get to the brain and enable it to relax. These moments of relaxation may promote to sound sleep. Stress and anxiety on the other hand can be treated by engaging in exercise and other physical activities. Medical studies suggest that physical activities promote the production of endorphins, the body's natural pain killer. Endorphins help elevates a person's mood and eliminates moments of distress. Many health specialists refer to this phenomenon as the runner's high. Health experts however warn individuals who partake in physical activities not to over train. Over training causes fatigue and diminish sterility, it temporarily reduces sperm quality and quantity. This happens because the body literally “kills” itself during exercise. To build and improve the body and needs rest to attain normal cell development. Too much physical activity may even reduce the level of testosterone in men. Though the use of medication for sleep aid is not prohibited, health specialists advise those who want to achieve worthwhile sleep to partake in other physical activities and healthy diets. People should bear in mind that there are no shortcuts in achieving good health and sound sleep.

    Control In Time Management

Control is having the power to manage ourselves. When we have control of our lives, then we have the ability to manage anything that comes our way. No one can control every aspect of life, but we can maintain some control over what happens to us. It is important to keep in mind that all things in life have an effect on us somehow, and when we are trying to learn time management, we need to consider that. The process of time management is complicated, but once mastered, makes life much easier. In order to develop an effective time management plan, you need to consider all areas of your life, and evaluate where your time is spent. In thinking about how you can better manage your time, you need to consider all factors: time with family, friends, work, yourself, etc. You must prepare yourself for the little crises that are inevitable in life. This is the start of how to learn to control and manage your time. There is no end to managing time, but if we are able to do it, life will be easier and less stressful. When considering how we can control our time management, you must consider such aspects of life as entertainment, relaxing, meals, dressing, and other things that form your life. Think about where you spend more time than you need, and figure out where you could use that time to make your life better. Eliminating wasted time in one realm of our lives and putting it somewhere else can help to build and solidify relationships, aid in stress relief, even help you do your job better. One place where you can concentrate on controlling your time is at the workplace. Not using your time wisely or spending too much time on a project that can be delegated to other co workers can make your job stressful, routine, and even boring. Taking control of your time will allow you to take on more meaningful projects, and be more valued as an employee. Control and management of your time is the best way to get the most out of your work, and your life.

An Oregon Coast Ghost Hunting Guide

: The winds cut deeper and make progressively louder noises as the days shorten. Fog creeps in from the sea more often. And then Halloween shows up, as if to really remind us about things otherworldly. It's no wonder Oregon's northern coast has a load of ghostly tales swirling about. It's no wonder the remake of "The Fog" currently in release is set in a fictional North Oregon Coast town. From flying pots and specters who've moved from one building to another in Seaside, the ghostly legends of a hotel in the Nehalem Bay, to the myriad of hauntings in ancient Astoria there's plenty for the ghost hunting tourist in this pristine and stunning area. SLEEPLESS IN SEASIDE Tales of things creepy abound in Seaside but they're hard to find. It's almost as if they've been swept under the carpet. For almost 100 years, the old Hotel Seaside (later named The Seasider) was a grandiose, beautiful building that was a sort of centerpiece to Seaside, at the Turnaround. So it's no surprise that place acquired tales of apparitions and otherworldly guests over the years. There were numerous spirits that purportedly haunted it. These days, the Shilo Inn sits in that spot. But when the old hotel was torn down, the spooks moved to Girtle's Restaurant, just down the street on Broadway, according to owner Bob Girtle. He recounted numerous stories of otherworldly happenings in the restaurant, having seen them himself or coming from various employees who tell their own tales. They talk of seeing the mysterious shadows of feet walking behind the door of a closed off area of the kitchen, visible from the small space between the floor and the door. This happens when it's not possible anyone else is in there, say Bob and his crew. They don't even check that room anymore when they see the shadows. Then there is the notorious flying coffee pot in the galley area between the kitchen and the main dining room. Bob and others on his staff have experienced this more than once. Sometimes it moves a bit, others it literally flies across the hallway. Bob said he inherited some employees of the old Seasider back in the 80's, and at least one said they saw some of the same ghosts. John Sowa, owner of the New Orleans style eatery Lil' Bayou, also related tales of moving objects in the kitchen and a strange sense of someone being near him while alone in his office. Kitchen utensils are found in different places than employees have left them, or an object suddenly falls off a hook or a shelf. Lil' Bayou lies in the historic Gilbert District of Seaside, which is filled with old buildings, almost all with upstairs areas that are often unused. The charming, atmospheric area has gone through a rebirth in recent years, and often there are whispers of ghosts coinciding with many of the renewed buildings. The Seaside Aquarium may have a closet containing something or rather, an upstairs that could be haunted. When the building was a natatorium back about 80 years ago, there were apartments at the top floor. That area isn't used much at all now, but manager Keith Chandler says he's heard whispers over the years the top floor is haunted. Various stories have been handed down through the generations about noises coming from there. EERIE AND NOT SO EERIE ON THE BAY Manzanita, which caps the north end of the Nehalem Bay, is shrouded in mists and mystery, with Neahkahnie Mountain looming overhead and legends of a galleon and its buried treasures. Some versions of that tale contain atrocities, like purportedly burying their African slaves alive with the treasure to keep the natives away. On its beaches, there are mysterious piles of rocks that have appeared over the years, apparently overnight. Sometimes they appear as single piles or stacks. No one has ever figured out who is responsible, creating speculation of an otherworldly artist. In nearby Wheeler, facing the Nehalem Bay, Old Wheeler Hotel owner Winston Laszlo says he's encountered several things in that old building he couldn't really explain. Sometimes, he said, he believes he sees someone in the corner of his eye, only to discover there's no one there. Once, Winston was looking in a mirror in the hotel's public area and saw the reflection of a man sitting in a chair behind him. Winston says he turned around to look at the man, whom he didn't recognize as a guest, and there was no one there. A pair of ghost hunters even came to the visit the place and took photos of what they believed could be "spirit orbs" just outside the basement area. Winston still has copies of these. Winston and wife Maranne Doyle Laszlo say the entire building seemed to be against them during the process of remodeling the ragged old construct into the first rate hotel it is now. They had a nagging feeling a presence seemed to arrange one disaster and setback after another, such as when a window blew out in a storm. Then, one day, they say the building seemed to accept them, and reconstruction proceeded smoothly thereafter. (. oldwheelerhotel. com. 877 653 4683.) In an email just before her visit, ghost hunter Martina DeLude told Winston that made sense. "Ghosts that haunt residential and business locations become very threatened when someone starts changing things that they are accustomed to. Some spirits actually become incensed when furniture is moved around. Just like the living, most spirits do not like change. Possibly, as soon as they realized that it was once again going to become a hotel perhaps something they may remember they decided to help you along instead of stifling your efforts." There's more on their investigation of the Old Wheeler Hotel at nwpprs. com/Investigations/Places02/OldWheeler. html. In other tales, Wheeler Antiques owner Garry Gitzen says a Wheeler woman, descended from local tribes, actually burned down her own house in recent years because disturbing spirits haunted it. She did this in lieu of tearing the thing down, never rebuilding it, with rumors floating about that Native American children had died in a fire in that spot in ancient times. Not all is creepy here. According to Winston and Garry, there is a host of well meaning spirits there known as the "Good Spirits of Wheeler," and Ekahni Books owner Peg Miller says the place is a sort of "spiritual vortex lite." They all point to something they call a "Wheeler Moment," where serendipity seems to suddenly rear its head. Locals talk of numerous circumstances where pleasant, happy coincidences popped up, assisting folks in some way. They all note various incidents where someone is discussing wanting to do something, and someone or some opportunity arises that helps things along like the time the Garry and Winston were talking about creating a film festival, and they discovered a documentary filmmaker was staying in town. ASTORIA OR GHOSTORIA? At the very tip of Oregon, Astoria is full of major ghost stories of one sort or another. That's no surprise, considering it's the oldest settlement west of the Mississippi. The Liberty Theater is widely regarded as haunted. It was once a haven for the likes of Duke Ellington, Jack Benny, Guy Lombardo and supposedly even gangster Al Capone. Purportedly, it's also occupied by someone named Paul. One employee was quoted as saying that Paul is "quite handsome," giving him the nickname Handsome Paul. He apparently wears a "white tuxedo and a panama hat," according to the Clatsop County Historical Society. Cast and crews over the years have talked about spotting him. While mostly just an apparition, he's been known to slam doors and make other unruly noises. Other tales from the theater include objects gliding through the air, knobs unscrewing themselves from appliances and utilities, as well as two or three other inhabitants from beyond. Also famous for being haunted is the firehouse there, plus the town has a brutal history of men being "shanghaied" in the early part of the century.
